Welcome to Stories Down South

Come on in. I’ve got some stories to share. (And I bet you do, too.)

My name is Jessica. I’m a girl born and raised in Alabama, so I know a thing or two about the South. There’s so much I love about this place. And so much that I don’t. Like most things south of the Mason-Dixon, it’s complicated.

I believe a tall glass of sweet tea soothes the soul. Everything is better cooked in a black cast iron skillet and nothing compares to a golden Gulf Coast sunset. I know for certain that there is power in the ballot box and endurance in the human spirit. I covet a woman’s right to her own body and despise the justification of hate and intolerance in the name of Jesus, or God, his Father.

We are better than our history. I just know it. I believe in accountability, understanding and forgiveness. I strive to be part of a more just society, a more humane community, a better tomorrow, a new & improved South.

This land and these people are as deep & rich as the mighty Mississippi and true as a summer day is long. Their stories matter. My story matters. Stories of yesterday and today that inform visions of a better tomorrow. I want to tell those stories. The complicated ones entangled in grace, mercy, and understanding.

So come along with me as I explore the South with a new lens – full of people and places that are familiar and quintessential, along with some you’ve never heard of. The history that makes us who we are, but does not define us.
